Blackadder

Now this is a sitcom, though you may doubt
once I have told you what it is about.
But it is brilliant I assure, this Moon would not try
to pull the wool over your eyes or tell you a lie.

Four seasons long it spans historical time
Season one medieval England, mead and wine,
King Richard sits upon the throne, but not for long
His head on a pole, a terrible mistake, his ghost forlong
Prince Blackadder, the first comes forth.
A feckless fool of little worth.

By season two its Elizabethan England Town
Blackadder a courtier with razor sharp wit and fast put down
His faithful sidekick, Baldrick
oh so stupid and very thick
And Queen Betty herself, the Virgin Queen
Crazy, childish and often just mean.

Season three is the Reginancy, the gormless Prince.
Blackadders descendants have gone downhill since,
now below stairs as butler but devious still
and Baldrick has a cunning plan, he always will.

Season Four and its the Somme
mud, machine guns and bombs
Blackadder now an officer in the army
with General Melchard who is more than a bit barmy

So why is it good? You may well ask.
Explaining that is no small task.
It delights in word games, puns and sounds
it plays with emotion round after round.
Its funny at times and absurd the next
Once you get it you'll will want your fix.

American sitcoms don't do much subtlety
they are a bit saccharin and afraid to just play.
They play it safer, the format rules
In the UK Monty Python made the rules into fools.
We like pathos, humour and pain
Inbetween those is where knowledge is gained.

So I give here below a taste of its absurd
Blackadder is finally marrying his bird,
But Lord Flashheart, the best man
is quite some guy, hero, legend and what a tan.

Where the mix of pathos is to the fore.
I urge you to watch to its end, 30 mins tops
so see how we brits do sitcoms (at least the ones that ain't flops).
